Okay so I think I have come up with a decent enough system that might work. Maybe. Let me know if you can find any problems.

It would go something like this:

  • Each event/quest will grant a character one ‘point’ or more depending on the event type.
  • Every character will start out average skill-wise at best. (You can start lower, I don’t know why you would want to but it is certainly possible.) By average I mean able to fight two to three monsters and in theory win.
  • Skills (Magic types, and abilities like shootan better or hittan harder) would be upgraded using points. One point would be required to get from level 1 to 2, two points to get from 2 to 3 and so on up to level 5.
  • Points can also be spent on weapon augments. Want a flaming sword that shoots balls of lightning and makes werewolves explode? It can be yours if you have nothing better to spend points on.
  • I would like to give people the opportunity to get a few points to mess around with when they join, that way if they want say, primarily an archer character they could put an extra point or two into accuracy or speed right of the bat. Maybe, I’m thinking on that one.

To keep things HOPEFULLY a bit balanced I think characters will only be allowed to pick two disciplines out of the three. You could have a ‘warrior archer’, ‘magic warrior’, or ‘magic archer’. I might give a small buff to people who only choose one discipline. Will/magic users will only be able to use a certain amount of spells at first.

I don’t plan on having too many different categories to level up, I think that other than magic, which had one for every spell, there were only three categories for skill and strength each.

I’m kind of modeling this off of PGMD and TG as well as the game itself. I like TG’s skill system, but I like PGMD’s leveling system.

For the sake of simplicity I might actually use fable 3 magic since that game dumbed it down considerably. There were five or so types compared to the first game which had waaay too many. Offensive spells like multi-arrow and berserk would be delegated to skill and strength fighters instead of will users for what I think should be obvious reasons.

My big concern is that will users will definitely have a leg up over strength and skill fighters in any combination.

I am not sure if i would use this, I’d like to avoid doing so if possible.
